One Year In: My Top 10 Baby Products I Actually Used Every Day
Becoming a Parent: What We Actually Used, the most useful UK baby products
Everyone talks about the fun parts of baby shopping, choosing cute outfits, decorating the nursery, building a wishlist. But once your baby arrives, practicality suddenly becomes everything.
After one full year of parenting, here’s my honest list of the most useful baby products we actually used daily.
1. Zip-Up Baby Grows
Why did no one warn me about poppers? Trying to match up tiny buttons at 2am with a wriggling baby is not it. Zip-up baby grows are an absolute game changer, quick, easy, and perfect for those midnight changes. Look for the double-zip versions so you can unzip from the bottom during nappy changes.
2. Joolz Aer (Suitable from Birth)
Buying a pram felt like one of the biggest baby shopping decisions. We started with the Joolz Geo 3 travel system, which was amazing for storage but so heavy. At 6 months, we switched to the Joolz Aer, and it’s been perfect, lightweight, easy to fold one-handed, even in the Tesco car park! It also it fits in an airplane cabin. Total mum win.
3. Dew Spray
If you haven’t heard of Dew Baby Spray, you need to! It’s a gentle, alcohol-free sanitising spray that’s safe from birth. We use it for toys, dummies, and highchairs, ideal when you’re out and about and need to quickly clean a dummy that’s just hit the floor.
4. Cold Water Milton Steriliser
We used MAM bottles, and while everyone raved about microwave sterilisers, I found them a hassle and I was always burning myself! The Milton cold water steriliser is simple, affordable, and efficient. change the water daily, soak bottles for 15 minutes, and you’re done.
5. Mum Cozy Retractable Stair Gate
A pricier buy, but honestly one of my favourites. The Mum Cozy stair gate fully retracts when not in use, and there’s no trip bar to step over. It looks sleek and makes my home feel less cluttered when my little one is at nursery.
6. The £5 Marketplace Bouncer
Confession: I bought a fancy bouncer that looked great on Instagram… and then my baby hated it.
The winner? A £5 Facebook Marketplace bouncer with one vibration setting. It kept my little one calm long enough for me to grab a shower or eat lunch, worth its weight in gold.
Velcro swaddles made it foolproof, affordable, quick, and baby slept like a dream. If you’re packing your hospital bag, grab a few of these from Amazon.
A friend recommended this, and I’ve never looked back. A changing roll holds nappies, wipes, spare clothes, everything you need for a quick change on the go. Perfect for coffee shop emergencies or when your hands are full.
9. VAX Spot Cleaner
This one’s not glamorous, but it’s hands-down one of our most-used items. From spit-up to weaning mess and now toddler spills, the VAX Spot Cleaner has saved our carpets more times than I can count.
10. A Professional Photoshoot
Okay, I might be biased as a photographer, but I learned this lesson the hard way! I didn’t book a newborn photoshoot because I thought I could do it myself, but ended up with nothing but selfies, those early days are busy!
Having someone else capture those early memories was the best decision. Your baby changes so fast, it’s worth having those moments documented beautifully.
Final Thoughts….
Baby shopping can feel overwhelming, but once you’ve lived it, you realise it’s the simple, practical items that make life easier.
If you’re expecting, I hope this helps you build a list of real-life baby essentials that will stand the test of time (and toddler chaos!).
